[HUNTSVILLE, AL – April 25, 2019] Dozens of local business leaders attended the 1st Annual “Invest in a Girl for Summer Camp” Breakfast on April 18, 2019, in support of Girls Inc. of Huntsville’s scholarship program, which provides free tuition to local girls who are unable to attend summer camp due to financial barriers. The event, which took place at the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center, raised enough funds to provide 20 girls with a full scholarship to Girls Inc. Summer Camp this year.
“We don’t turn a girl away because of her family’s inability to pay.” says Executive Director Stephanie Malone, “The community’s support is so important to ensure that all girls have the opportunity to experience summer camp in a safe environment where they are gaining the skills that will help them grow into the strong, smart, and bold women of the future”. Girls Inc. currently has 27 scholarship requests for this year’s summer program, and are hoping to raise funds for the remaining 7 scholarships ($600 per girl) through their social media and direct mail campaigns.
Girls Incorporated of Huntsville provides vital after-school, summer, spring, and fall break enrichment and educational programs year-round to girls from kindergarten to 8th grade with the goal of equipping girls with the skills to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent. Informed by girls and their families, we also advocate for legislation and policies to increase opportunities and rights for all girls.
